IB DP Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation Higher Level Course Companion (NYP Due February 2027)
IB DP Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation Higher Level Course Companion (NYP Due February 2027)
Oxford Resources for IB DP Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation Higher Level Course Book is Oxford University Press’s new concept-based course book for IB Math AI HL, fully updated for the IB’s 2027 subject guide. It covers the new course from first teaching in August 2027 through to first exams in May 2029. It is written by Jennifer Chang Wathall, David Harris, Panayiotis Economopoulos, Tony Halsey and Peter Gray, experienced IB authors, examiners and educators.
What the 2027 Update Means for Your AI HL Course
The IB describes the new course as a refinement, not a reinvention, designed for a smooth transition with no major retraining. Content has been reduced and nothing has been added. Here’s what changes for HL.
Topics removed from AI HL:
- Complex numbers
- Vector product
- Poisson distribution
- Hypothesis tests for the population mean of a normal distribution, the population mean of a Poisson distribution, and the correlation coefficient
Exam changes from May 2029:
| Paper | Previous | From 2029 |
|---|---|---|
| Paper 1 | 110 marks | 100 marks |
| Paper 2 | 110 marks | 100 marks |
| Paper 3 | 55 marks, 1 hr 15 min | 50 marks, 1 hour |
New internal assessment criteria (now the same for SL and HL):
| Criterion | Marks |
|---|---|
| A: Problem specification | 4 |
| B: Abstraction | 6 |
| C: Computation | 4 |
| D: Interpretation | 6 |
The Mathematical Exploration remains the IA task, but students are now assessed on the IB’s four-stage mathematical inquiry process. The course keeps its core focus on mathematical modelling and statistical analysis, along with functions and calculus and the use of technology to solve problems in context.
How This Course Book Supports Your Teaching
Fully aligned with the new guide. Every syllabus topic and learning outcome is covered with clear explanations, worked solutions and varied activities, so you can plan with confidence.
A clear conceptual framework. The concept-based structure gives departments a coherent way to plan DP Mathematics, organized around the big ideas rather than isolated techniques.
Built around the guiding questions. The guiding questions introduced in the 2027 subject guide are embedded throughout, ready to drive inquiry-based lessons.
Stronger IA preparation. Detailed guidance and extensive practice support the new assessment requirements. A strengthened computational, inquiry-based approach helps students build successful Mathematical Explorations against the new criteria.
Differentiation from day one. “Prior Knowledge” exercises let you check readiness before each topic, so the whole class starts from a secure base.
TOK and international-mindedness. Prompts throughout spark class discussion and give students a starting point for Mathematics TOK investigations.
Responsible AI use. A “Building your AI toolkit” feature teaches students to use artificial intelligence tools effectively, ethically and responsibly. This is useful guidance as schools set AI policies for coursework.
Online answers. Answers are hosted online and continuously updated, which supports both your planning and students’ independent study.

Teacher FAQs
Is this course book aligned with the 2027 IB Math AI subject guide?
Yes. Oxford has fully updated it for the 2027 subject guide, for first teaching in August 2027 and first assessment in May 2029.
Will it arrive in time for August 2027 teaching?
Oxford’s estimated publication date is 4 February 2027. Pre-orders ship as soon as stock is available, giving departments time to plan before the new course starts.
Does it still cover complex numbers and the Poisson distribution?
No. These are removed from AI HL in the 2027 guide, along with the vector product and several hypothesis tests, and the course book follows the new content.
Does it support the new IA criteria?
Yes. It provides detailed guidance and practice for the new assessment requirements, with an inquiry-based approach matching the four new criteria: problem specification, abstraction, computation and interpretation.
“Building your AI toolkit”: is that about the AI math course?
No. In that feature, “AI” means artificial intelligence. The book itself is for the Applications and Interpretation (AI) HL course.
Is there a Standard Level version or an eBook?
Oxford publishes a separate AI Standard Level Course Book for the 2027 guide, and an eBook version of this title is sold separately. This listing is for the printed paperback.
