Is AA SL the Right Course?

Analysis and Approaches is the IB math course built on algebra, functions and calculus, with an emphasis on mathematical reasoning and solving problems both with and without a calculator. At Standard Level, it suits students who want a solid, rigorous math foundation for university courses in the sciences, economics, business or medicine, without the full depth of HL.

How AA SL Changes in 2027

Previous syllabus 2027 syllabus
Financial applications Included Removed
Bivariate data Included Removed
New topics n/a None added
Paper 1 and Paper 2 80 marks each 75 marks each
Internal assessment SL-specific criteria Shared SL/HL criteria: problem specification, abstraction, computation, interpretation

The update trims the course rather than rebuilding it. Students still complete the Mathematical Exploration, but it is now assessed through the IB’s four-stage inquiry process.

What Makes This Oxford Course Book Different

Concept-based from the ground up. Each topic is linked to the big mathematical ideas behind it, so students understand why methods work, not only how to use them.

Guiding questions built in. The 2027 subject guide introduces guiding questions for each area of study. This book uses them throughout to lead students into each topic through inquiry.

Ready for the new Exploration. It offers detailed guidance and plenty of practice for the new assessment requirements, with a strengthened computational, inquiry-based approach to help students produce a successful Mathematical Exploration.

Artificial intelligence, used responsibly. A “Building your AI toolkit” feature teaches students to use AI tools effectively, ethically and responsibly in their math studies.

For Students

  • Prior Knowledge exercises to check readiness before each topic
  • Clear explanations and worked solutions covering every syllabus topic and learning outcome
  • Varied activities and extensive practice aligned with the new assessments
  • Online answers, kept up to date, for checking work during independent study

For Teachers

  • A clear conceptual framework for planning DP Mathematics
  • Content written by experienced IB authors, examiners and educators
  • Theory of Knowledge and international-mindedness prompts that open discussion and inspire TOK investigations

Questions Before You Buy

Is this the new Oxford IB Math AA SL book for 2027?
Yes. It is fully updated for the 2027 subject guide, for students starting in August 2027 and taking first exams in May 2029.

Should I choose AA SL or AA HL?
HL covers the same core plus extra, more demanding content and a third exam paper. Choose HL if your university course requires it, for example most math, engineering and physics degrees. Otherwise SL is usually the right fit. The Oxford AA HL Course Book is ISBN 9781382080750.

Is AA SL the same as AI SL?
No. AA (Analysis and Approaches) focuses on algebra and calculus. AI (Applications and Interpretation) focuses on modelling and statistics. Make sure you buy the book for the course your school has placed you in.

Does “Building your AI toolkit” relate to the AI math course?
No. In this feature, “AI” means artificial intelligence. It’s about using AI tools responsibly in your studies.

Where are the answers?
Answers are hosted online, so they stay accurate and up to date.

Is there an eBook?
Oxford sells an eBook version separately. This listing is for the printed paperback.
