Oxford Resources for IB DP Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches Higher Level Course Book is Oxford University Press’s new concept-based textbook for IB Math AA HL, fully updated for the IB’s 2027 subject guide. It is for students starting the course in August 2027, with first exams in May 2029. Published in cooperation with the IB, it is written by Rose Harrison, Marlene Torres-Skoumal, Jennifer Chang Wathall, Josip Harcet and Lorraine Heinrichs.

Why Choose the Oxford AA HL Course Book?

Published in cooperation with the IB. Oxford states that the content has been reviewed and approved for alignment with the new guide, so you can be confident it covers what students will be assessed on.

Concept-based learning. Rather than treating topics as a list of techniques, the book builds understanding around the big mathematical ideas behind them. This is the approach the IB promotes across the Diploma Programme.

Built around the new guiding questions. The 2027 subject guide introduces guiding questions for each area of study. This book embeds them throughout to drive inquiry and deepen understanding.

Comprehensive at 768 pages. It covers every syllabus topic and learning outcome, with clear explanations, worked solutions and varied activities.

What Changed in AA HL for 2027?

The IB’s update streamlines the course without adding anything new:

  • Removed from AA HL: financial applications, proof by counterexample, bivariate data and Euler’s method
  • New content: none
  • Papers 1 and 2: now 100 marks each (previously 110)
  • Paper 3: now 50 marks in 1 hour (previously 55 marks in 1 hour 15 minutes)
  • Internal assessment: the Mathematical Exploration remains, now marked on criteria shared with SL: problem specification, abstraction, computation and interpretation

Features Inside

  • Prior Knowledge exercises at the start of topics, so students are ready before new material begins
  • Guiding questions from the new subject guide, woven through every chapter
  • Clear explanations and worked solutions across all syllabus content
  • Extensive practice matched to the new assessment requirements
  • Exploration support, with a stronger computational, inquiry-based approach to help students write a successful Mathematical Exploration
  • “Building your AI toolkit”, a feature teaching students to use artificial intelligence tools effectively, ethically and responsibly in their math work
  • Theory of Knowledge links and international-mindedness prompts to spark discussion and TOK investigations
  • Answers online, kept up to date for independent study and lesson planning

FAQ

Is this Oxford book updated for the new IB math syllabus?
Yes. It is fully updated for the 2027 subject guide, for first teaching in August 2027 and first exams in May 2029.

What does “Building your AI toolkit” mean? Is it about the AI math course?
No. Here “AI” means artificial intelligence. The feature shows students how to use AI tools responsibly. This book is for the Analysis and Approaches (AA) course, not Applications and Interpretation (also abbreviated “AI”).

Are the answers in the book?
Answers are hosted online, so they can be updated and are easy to access.

Is there an eBook?
Oxford offers an eBook version separately. This listing is for the printed paperback.

How is the Oxford book different from other AA HL textbooks?
It is concept-based, published in cooperation with the IB, and built around the new guiding questions. It also includes TOK support and a responsible-AI feature. All the major publishers have updated their AA HL books for 2027, so ask your teacher which one your school uses.
