Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches for the IB Diploma Higher Level (Print Book + eBook) is Pearson’s new student textbook for the most demanding IB math course, IB Math AA HL, written for the 2027 Subject Guide. It is for students starting the Diploma Programme in August 2027, who will sit their first exams in May 2029. The book was developed in cooperation with the IB, and the series is led by former IB Mathematics Chief Examiner Ibrahim Wazir.

In the pack: one printed student textbook and a code for the eBook with 2 years of access.

The Higher Level Course Has Changed. This Book Is Ready.

AA HL is the IB math course for students heading toward math, engineering, physics, computer science or economics at university. For 2027, the IB has refined the course rather than rebuilt it. Some topics are gone, nothing new has been added, and the exams are shorter.

What’s different in AA HL from 2027:

  • Topics removed: financial applications, proof by counterexample, bivariate data and Euler’s method
  • No new content, so students can go deeper on what remains
  • Papers 1 and 2: now 100 marks each, down from 110
  • Paper 3: now 50 marks in 1 hour, down from 55 marks in 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Internal assessment: the Mathematical Exploration stays, but is now marked on new criteria shared with SL. These are problem specification, abstraction, computation and interpretation

A Problem-Solving Method Students Can Rely On

HL questions often look unfamiliar. This book teaches one method to handle them. Every worked example walks through the IB’s four inquiry stages:

  1. Problem specification: what is being asked?
  2. Abstraction: turning the problem into mathematical form
  3. Computation: carrying out the working, by hand or with technology
  4. Interpretation: checking the answer makes sense in context

These are the same four stages the IB uses to mark the new internal assessment. Practising them through the book prepares students for the exams and for their Exploration.

Features That Support Every HL Student

Before a topic

  • Learning objectives that set out exactly what each chapter covers in the new guide
  • Do You Recall questions to refresh earlier knowledge
  • Explorations where students test their own ideas before the formal teaching

While learning

  • Worked examples in the Subject Guide’s problem-solving language
  • Key Fact and Key Term boxes for essential results and definitions
  • Hint boxes pointing out common mistakes and smart approaches
  • Investigations and Reflections that take concepts further

Stretching and exam prep

  • Challenge tags flagging extension material for top-grade students
  • Exercises and practice questions, including past IB paper questions
  • Internal Assessment chapter guiding students through the Mathematical Exploration from start to finish

Anywhere access

  • 2-year eBook subscription, so the book is available on a laptop or tablet as well as in print

Who Wrote It

The author team is made up of IB insiders: former and current IB examiners, IA moderators, workshop leaders and curriculum reviewers who teach at international schools worldwide. Series Editor Ibrahim Wazir has served as IB Mathematics Chief Examiner and on the IB Curriculum Committee.

Is This the Right Book?

  • Yes, if you’re starting IB Math AA HL in August 2027 or later
  • Yes, if you teach AA HL and are preparing for the new syllabus
  • No, if you’re taking SL: you need the separate Analysis and Approaches Standard Level book (ISBN 9781292499604)
  • No, if you’re taking Applications and Interpretation (AI): that’s a different course with its own books
  • No, if you sit exams before 2029: you’re still on the previous syllabus

Common Questions

Does this cover the new Paper 3?
The book is aligned to the 2027 Subject Guide, which sets the content for all three HL papers. From 2029, Paper 3 is 50 marks in 1 hour.

Do I get the eBook as well as the printed book?
Yes. The access code inside gives one student 2 years of eBook access.

Is AA HL harder than AI HL?
They’re different rather than simply harder or easier. AA HL is more algebraic and proof-focused, with a heavy emphasis on calculus. AI HL leans toward modelling, statistics and technology. Many universities ask for AA HL for math and engineering degrees, so check entry requirements if you’re unsure.

Is there a Standard Level version?
Yes. Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches for the IB Diploma Standard Level (Print Book + eBook), ISBN 9781292499604.
