Exam Practice Workbook for Mathematics for the IB Diploma: Applications and Interpretation HL, 2nd Edition gives Higher Level students the volume of exam-style practice the AI HL course demands, fully aligned to the IB’s 2027 subject guide for first exams in May 2029. It is written by Paul Fannon, Vesna Kadelburg and Stephen Ward, the authors of Hachette Learning’s popular Mathematics for the IB Diploma series.

Built for Higher Level Exam Readiness

AI HL students sit three papers, and success depends on practising the kinds of modelling, statistics and technology-based questions the IB sets. This 240-page workbook puts that practice in one place. Every question is tied to a specific learning objective, so you can set practice that matches each lesson and pinpoint exactly where students need support.

Key Features

Practice mapped to the new guide

  • Hundreds of questions mapped line by line to the latest IB guide
  • Each question linked to a learning objective, for targeted homework and intervention

Exam preparation

  • Mock exam papers with fully worked mark schemes for realistic timed practice
  • Exam technique and revision guidance for tackling IB-style questions
  • Mark scheme advice that shows students how examiners award marks
  • Calculator skills support, vital for a course built around technology

Progress tracking

  • Syllabus mapping charts to see coverage at a glance
  • Revision checklists that help students identify strengths and gaps
  • Recap and consolidation opportunities across the whole two-year course

Aligned to the 2027 AI HL Changes

Practice from older workbooks no longer matches the course. Under the 2027 guide:

  • Removed from AI HL: complex numbers, the vector product, the Poisson distribution, and hypothesis tests for the mean of a normal distribution, the mean of a Poisson distribution and the correlation coefficient
  • No new content added
  • Papers 1 and 2: now 100 marks each (previously 110)
  • Paper 3: now 50 marks in 1 hour (previously 55 marks in 1 hour 15 minutes)
  • Internal assessment: new criteria shared with SL, which are problem specification, abstraction, computation and interpretation

This 2nd edition is written for the new course, so students practise only what will be examined from 2029.

How Teachers Use It

  • Homework linked directly to the lesson objective just taught
  • Independent study for students who want extra practice
  • Extension work for students aiming for a 7
  • Mock exam preparation using the full papers and worked mark schemes
  • Revision in the run-up to exams, using the checklists to focus effort
