DP Language and Literature

DP Language and Literature is Group 1 of the IB Diploma Programme, also known as Studies in Language and Literature. Students study their first language (native or best language) through one of three available courses: Language A: Language and Literature, Language A: Literature, and Literature and Performance. This collection brings together textbooks, study guides, and resource books from leading IB publishers, including Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, Pearson Education, Hachette Learning, and IB Source.

The Group 1 curriculum was last updated in 2019, with first teaching in September 2019 and first assessment in 2021, introducing the current framework of Areas of Exploration, course concepts, and global issues that remains in place today. All titles in this collection are aligned with this current syllabus.

Courses covered

• Language A: Language and Literature (SL & HL) – explores literary and non-literary texts, media, and language in context, structured around Areas of Exploration and course concepts, with assessment including a comparative essay and an Individual Oral centered on a global issue.
• Language A: Literature (SL & HL) – focuses exclusively on literary texts, exploring the nature of literature, textuality, and the aesthetic function of literary language through close reading and critical analysis.
• Literature and Performance (SL only) – an interdisciplinary course linking Group 1 studies with the arts, exploring literature through performance-based approaches.
