Mathematics for the IB Diploma: Analysis and Approaches HL, 2nd Edition is the brand-new, fully updated Higher Level textbook for the revised IB Math AA HL course. It is for first teaching in August 2027 and first assessment in May 2029. It is written by Paul Fannon, Vesna Kadelburg, Ben Woolley and Stephen Ward, the author team behind the popular Mathematics for the IB Diploma series, and published by Hachette Learning (formerly Hodder Education).

Updated for the New IB Math AA Syllabus

The IB has revised the Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches course for students starting the Diploma Programme from August 2027. This second edition is updated for the new course guide, so students learn exactly what will be examined from 2029.

Key changes in the new HL course:

  • Content removed at HL: financial applications, proof by counterexample, bivariate data, and Euler’s method
  • No new content added, giving a more focused, coherent course
  • Shorter exams: HL Papers 1 and 2 are now 100 marks each (previously 110), and Paper 3 is 50 marks over 1 hour (previously 55 marks over 1 hour 15 minutes)
  • Revised internal assessment: the mathematical exploration now uses new criteria shared by SL and HL, which are problem specification, abstraction, computation and interpretation

What’s Inside

  • Clear explanations of key concepts and applications, with plenty of worked examples and model answers
  • Thousands of practice questions, color-coded by difficulty
  • Real-world examples and starter activities that build problem-solving skills
  • Exam preparation with past paper questions plus complete practice exam papers and mark schemes
  • Mapped to the new IB guide, so it’s easy to follow through the course
  • Focus on functions and calculus, the heart of the AA course, building rigorous mathematical reasoning and strong algebra skills

Who This Book Is For

  • IB Diploma students starting Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL (Math AA HL) in 2027 or later
  • IB math teachers and schools preparing for the new syllabus
  • Parents and tutors supporting an IB Math AA HL student
  • Students aiming for university courses in math, engineering, physics, economics or computer science

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this book for the new IB Math AA syllabus?
Yes. This 2nd edition is updated for the revised course, first taught in August 2027 and first examined in May 2029.

Who wrote this book?
Paul Fannon, Vesna Kadelburg, Ben Woolley and Stephen Ward, the author team behind the Mathematics for the IB Diploma series.

Should I buy the 1st or 2nd edition?
Students starting IB Math AA HL in August 2027 or later should use this 2nd edition. Students sitting exams before 2029 are on the previous syllabus and should use the 1st edition. If unsure, check with your teacher or DP coordinator.

Is this the SL or HL book?
This is the Higher Level (HL) book. Standard Level students need Mathematics for the IB Diploma: Analysis and Approaches SL, 2nd Edition (ISBN 9781036021955).

What’s the difference between Math AA and Math AI?
Analysis and Approaches (AA) focuses on functions, calculus and mathematical reasoning. Applications and Interpretation (AI) focuses on modelling, statistics and using technology. Check which course your school has placed you in before buying.

Is this the same as “IB Math AA HL”?
Yes. “AA” is the short name for the Analysis and Approaches course.
