Mathematics 8 (MYP 3) third edition has been designed and written for the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IB MYP) Mathematics framework, providing complete coverage of the content and expectations outlined.
Discussions, Activities, Investigations, and Research exercises are used throughout the chapters to develop conceptual understanding. Material is presented in a clear, easy-to-follow style to aid comprehension and retention, especially for English Language Learners. Each chapter ends with extensive review sets and an online multiple-choice quiz.

The Global Context projects highlight the use of mathematics in understanding history, culture, science, society, and environment. We have aimed to provide a diversity of topics and styles to create interest for all students and illustrate the real-world application of mathematics.
We have developed this book in consultation with experienced teachers of IB Mathematics internationally but independent of the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO). It is not endorsed by the IBO.
We have endeavoured to publish a stimulating and thorough textbook and digital resource to develop and encourage student understanding and nurturing an appreciation of mathematics.
MYP 3 3rd Edition Changes
Material that has been added:
Profit and loss, and VAT and GST, have been added to Chapter 5 (Percentage).
Power equations have been added to Chapter 7 (Equations).
Circles have been added to Chapter 9 (Plane geometry).
The area of a kite has been added to Chapter 11 (Measurement: Length and area).
Chapter 13 (Time) has been added.
Probability from Venn diagrams has been added to Chapter 17 (Probability).
Material that has been removed:
Absolute value has been moved to MYP 4, as outlined in the MYP Framework.
Simple interest has been removed from Chapter 5 (Percentage).
Quadratic expansion and factorisation, and quadratic equations, have been removed.
Number sequences have been removed from Chapter 10 (Algebra: formulae).

Material that has been restructured:
In Chapter 1 (Number), factors and multiples have been moved later in the chapter, so they are better aligned with highest common factor and lowest common multiple.
The ratio material, which was previously contained in a section in Chapter 3 (Real numbers and ratio), has been expanded into its own chapter, and has had scale diagrams added to it.
With quadratic factorisation removed, algebraic common factors have been moved to Chapter 4 (Algebraic expressions), and simple factorisation has been moved to Chapter 6 (Laws of algebra).
The material previously in Chapter 6 (Interpreting tables and graphs) has been moved to the relevant sections of Chapters 5 (Percentage), 16 (Rates and line graphs), and 18 (Statistics).
The material previously in Section 9A (Review of geometric facts) has been expanded into Chapter 8 (Lines and angles). This chapter now gives students more opportunities to find unknowns in geometric figures once they have the tools to solve linear equations.
Chapter 10 (Algebra: formulae) has been restructured to avoid repetition of ideas, and now asks students to find unknowns which are not the subject of the formula.
The new Chapter 16 (Rates and line graphs) contains some rates material which previously existed in MYP2, as well as line graph material which previously existed in Chapter 6 (Interpreting tables and graphs) and Chapter 14 (Coordinate geometry).
Pythagoras’ theorem has been moved towards the end of the book, to indicate that it is not included in the MYP 1-3 Framework, but can still be studied as extension material.
The popular Problem solving chapter has been expanded. To encourage students to attempt more of the questions, many of the problems have been moved from Activities into the Exercises themselves.
More broadly, we have adjusted how we organise the sections in each chapter, so there are less subsections within sections. This will make it easier for teachers and students to see what is in each chapter from the table of contents or the chapter title page.
Each chapter now ends with an online interactive multiple choice test, which is accessed through the digital version of the book.
The book now contains more Activities and Discussions throughout the chapters. These give students the opportunity to have more informal conversations about mathematics, and are also a good source of extra material for students who have finished their work early.
We have updated the Global Context projects, and added some new projects, so there are now ten projects in total. We have also vastly improved the task-specific descriptors, making it much easier for teachers to assess each task against the relevant assessment criterion.
The Self-Tutor scripts have also been updated, with a greater emphasis placed on enhancing student understanding, by providing more detailed explanations than can be given on the pages of a textbook.
The graphics calculator instructions have been updated. Instructions are now given for the Casio fxCG5
